Weddings are no different. From the parties we throw to the locations in which we say our vows, a huge amount of how people have planned their weddings down the years will have been affected to some degree by how celebrities have shaped popular culture. Even the ways in which we propose and the rings we offer are very much informed by celebrity culture, and not only will our approach to an engagement be affected by what those around us are doing, but how much an engagement costs will also be greatly influenced by what celebrities have turned into hot property (and, of course, what they have not).
Current trends
Whilst current trends may not pass muster with you, the lady you are proposing to may see things slightly differently. Whilst some will very much want a traditional proposal, with a man seeking the permission of the father before getting down on bended knee, others may very much be attracted by the lavish shows of affection or public proposals that modern celebrities have made the norm.
When it comes to rings, whilst the cost of the diamonds, gold and craftsmanship that have gone into making a ring will play a very important role in determining its price, modern trends put in place by both celebrities and the media will also very much affect how much a specific ring costs. As such, to buy a ring that is very much in with modern trends, you may have to shell out far more, even if the quality of the ring hasn’t changed. Likewise, in some cases you may actually end up paying less. After all, if the number of a certain type of ring being made is dramatically increased, the asking price can drop accordingly. However, this may also leave you offering a ring very similar in style to those that many people around you have. Furthermore, if you choose to propose in a way similar to that of celebrities, you may also fail to have a unique story to tell and will instead merely be offering a retread of someone else’s fairytale proposal.
Going your own way
The best option is to go your own way with a proposal. Whilst your partner may seem to be expecting some dramatic show of affection in line with current trends or a ring identical to that worn by her favourite singer, she is actually likely to be far more touched by something truly original. Meanwhile, whilst one type of ring may currently be in vogue, and whilst one celebrity may currently be your partner’s fashion icon, these passions may merely be transitory. The engagement ring you offer on the other hand needs to last a lifetime, so be sure to think of the styles and indeed the interests of your partner and things need to consider when buying a wedding ring.
If you and your partner love extreme sports, why not propose during a skydive? If you love the quietness of the countryside, why not choose to get down on that bended knee in front of a roaring fire in your own private retreat? From the ring you offer through to how you ask for her hand, making it unique and personal will be the most important thing. So don’t be swayed by what the celebrities are doing. Not only might it affect how much you spend, but it might also make your proposal far less effective.
