Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have shown that wearing helmets does save lives. However, the same studies have shown that an improperly fitted or worn helmet can be just as ineffective as wearing no helmet at all. The implementation of helmet campaigns should be commended. However, these campaigns should include education on the proper use of helmets in order for them to be effective.

Wearing a helmet it suppose to be instinctual, a natural thing, self protecting instinct,…not a statistic.
But I agree, some people need to be educated in this direction.

Most people that talk about helmets as a natural thing, need to educate themselves. Luckily nowadays may sources on the internet provides us with ample opportunities to do so. Read and discuss ad use your own sound judgement, but first of all have a open mind, and take your time. The Wikipedia is a nice starting point.

What is often ( conveniently ?) forgotten is that many more pedestrians and car-users get serious head injuries in traffic than cyclists.
