Marijuana Reform Ads

The rejected advertisement sponsored by the ACLU, Change the Climate, the Drug Policy Alliance, and the Marijuana Policy Project shows a group of ordinary people standing behind prison bars under the headline, “Marijuana Laws Waste Billions of Taxpayer Dollars to Lock Up Non-Violent Americans.” The same groups that sought to run the advertisement filed today’s lawsuit.

It’s good to see them joining forces for an ad like this. But people need to follow the money… there’s a reason certain people want a huge part of the population locked up - it gives them a free workforce.

This is the truth! The whole idea of nonviolent crime is a joke.

As an aside, how did we ever get to the point where we had to make sure our speech was OK before we said it? Is our freedom of speech only allowed if it’s sanctioned by the Government?

I am a non drug user, but I believe that laws should be made to crack down on the drugs that actually hurt people like meth and crack. These drugs make people dangerous. Pot is just going to make people relax or laugh. Yes anything done in an extreme is harmful. They have not banned overeating and that is killing people everyday.

OMG yes a few years ago i went on a mission church trip ( and yes i do smoke) one of our missions was to go and talk to homless people and get to know them. there was this one guy that did no do drugs he was just getting a bad start on his life he said this exact thing it really made me think. it is so true

legalize it its just a plant

Regardless of whether smoking is right or wrong…the money obviousely is much better spent on education.

I’m a smoker, and I can say that this ad should be aloud. It’s true to the pint. We’re putting people and kids behind bars for just having a couple grams of Marijuana on them even though they aren’t doing anything else wrong.
I do agree, though, with Ajay about how the money should go towards education rather than meaningless arrests for non-violent acts when someone just wants to chill out and have a nice little buzz.

They should put the ads on youtube and myspace more people will see them anyway

For us non-Americans, can someone explain who refused these adverts and what reason they gave? Is this a government thing? Or the billboard companies don’t want to take them? Or are these ads supposed to qualify for some sort of charitable/political speech status?

Sorry, this might seem an obvious question if you live in the US, but to me it seems a bit baffling.

    Rich.

Murdock says, “…but people need to follow the money.”
    Indeed.
I travel to the Netherlands almost every year. About 10 years ago a particular variety of sinsemilla http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_%28drug%29_cultivation#Sinsemilla marijuana being sold in the US and loosely called , “Oregon Green Bud,” had a street value of around $700 an ounce. Yes, that’s right, $700, if you could even find where to buy it.
In Amsterdam a similar product, perhaps better in the opinion of some, and called, “Super Skunk,” sold for around $144 an ounce.
The difference between $700 and $144 an ounce is the reason that Marijuana is illegal in this country. Ask Austin Nichols, http://www.wildturkeybourbon.com/home.asp or Joe Coors, http://www.coors.com/ I am sure they have an opinion about that dangerous, “stepper,” NOT drug.

    Rich -

I would guess it’s probably whatever company is providing the ad space that refused to show them.

The US government has very little authority to regulate that kind of thing. They could probably censor if it was blatantly obscene, but they can’t censor political speech… yet.

How can something natural be illegal? Nature should never be banned.

I have smoked pot for about 5 years now, I have various friends who have smoked it longer then I, and my brother has smoked it for longer then I have been alive.

I live in Canada, here having a couple grams on you is hardly even worth the cops time, I know this because I have been caught with a few grams of pot before. The officer told me, next time not even try to hide that, because its a waste of everyones time.

Out of everyone I know who smokes pot, only one of us has a criminal record, and its from a traffic violation.

I work as a computer technician and I am very successful at what I do, if pot made me stupid, I don’t see where its coming from, if pot makes you violent, then I would be a sever deviation form this “statistic”, if pot is a gateway drug, then I have yet to walk through it.

Basically what the media tells you about pot, is an out right lie, and a slap to the face.

Why dont we take note of the countries that have legalized drugs? Those countries have aloty less violent crime.

If you legalized drugs and use the money raised for education and help for those who ask for it we would be alot better off.

decriminalize drugs and then our jails are empty for REAL criminals. If the jails are not full then you dont have to let violent criminals out early.

Users of drugs only hurt themselves. Families are hurt by those who become addicted but thats where the money raised from “the drug tax” would help. Alot of adicts cant afford the help they need to get their life back under control.

The only real bad effects from doing drugs are poor health and jail. When are trans-fats going on the banned list? They are more harmful than weed.

If drugs were legalized then the govt could regulate them and take the money from the cartels and other shady characters that are profiting now.

    Rich,

This link http://www.changetheclimate.org/campaigns/02_18_04/ should take you to a page to explain who denied the advertisement and who is being sued.

It’s good to see progress, even if it’s being shutdown.
