Ghd: girls wish - Thy will be done commercials
Published November 23rd, 2007 in Advert, Campaigns, Commercials, Cosmetics, Entertainment, Fashion, Kids, Personal Care, TV, VideoCommercial done by Tbwa Manchester for GHD`s newest campaign called “a new religion for hair”.
The spot is starting out lovable and charming with three kids playing but is ending with nicest quote that will define the tagline of this campaign:
Piss off and die you wanker. Thy will be done
I’m a big fan of kid videos especially is they have grown ups humor.
The second spot uses the same motivation of those girls who wish to impress with their hair. First four prayers are speaking in foreign languages and only the last one talks in English.
Some consider this campaign as being promoted using offensive adverts by “mis-use of the Christian symbol of the Cross and the words of Jesus “Thy will be done””.
I just think this tv commercials have nothing to do with symbols and words, it`s a way of promoting a product by creating “controversial” scenes. Audience can enjoy or not his kind of advertise and this will be reflected in their own way in buying or appreciating a product. Spots do what are meant to do: promote, attract, lie, exaggerate and sell.
Product: GHD
Agency: Tbwa Manchester
Country: United Kingdom
- Liu Jo jeans new Bottom-Up Collection spot
- The Guinness Home Grown commercial
- Jerry Seinfeld the HP Hands commercial
- Sunsilk Shampoo
- Nokia 6288 - Follow the Light

The agency risked a lot with this campaign. Well, at least it would have been a huge risk in my country as the target market would have been divided in two: the detractors and the consumers.
On what’s regarding the second video, I think different than you.
-5 languages because women all over the world (France, Italy, England, USA, Spain) think alike in certain cases (one of which is perfectly illustrated here); the language doesn’t count as a bad attribute, but as a global similar overview of an act (in out case a prayer)
-in the end, all girls address to the same God, though each in her own language
-there are both symbols and words used but they are used with a purpose, to create that controversy, because usually controversy creates fuss and fuss gets a product known and sold,
Even if the ad is to be banned as offensive, we will have bought the product already, so the ad will have done the trick, too.
That is a crazy ad. It is a little edgy, but It doesn’t bother me. I think it’s a great ad.
